The matter pertaining to the field has been made clear; but who is the knower of the field? Knowledge of That...this is not commonplace knowledge. 'Kshetrajnam chap imam viddhi' the knower of field is the Lord Himself. Therefore, one cannot know Him with deformities. It is essential to have purity in the inner-self for the same. That one should be free of the deformities, it will be necessary to adopt some means. These means themselves constitute knowledge. For this the Lord has already talked about in the second verse. That the true knowledge of the field and its knower is the real knowledge; the required attributes given as the means for attaining this very knowledge are described in following verses-
The arrogance which develops due to the sense of superiority due to the beauty of the body, the qualities and its cleverness and power of wealth associated with it, the strength of people connected with it, physical strength etc. even in the sphere of spirituality in context of wisdom, the absence of that is humility. One is not so great as one desires to portray himself to be, does not possess that much as one likes to display, does not have that much knowledge or qualities inside him as one wants to flaunt-this is arrogance or ostentation. Whatever is inside the same is outside; whatever is stated one should act in tandem with it-this is unpretentiousness.
Not to cause injury to anyone by thought, word or deed is non-injury and to forgive the one who tries to trouble us is forgiveness. The absence of malice in the mind, useless pride and obstinacy, etc and neither its reflection in the words of speech or conduct 'saral swabhav na mann kutilayee' (manas) straightforward conduct and the mind free of crookedness; this is the state of straightforwardness.
From where one receives the means of self-upliftment and knowledge-the service and veneration of such a teacher. There is a strong need in life for a teacher-nearness to him, his discipline and for his emulation. Without the guidance of a great soul having the knowledge of essential truth, the knowledge cannot be perfected inside; desire, aversion, arrogance, pride, deformities, etc. will persist; that is why 'acharyopasanam' veneration of the teacher is essential! The purity of the body and mind is purity in actual sense. That mind which does not entertain impure and inauspicious thoughts! The inner purity resulting from right qualities, right thoughts, right tendencies and purity of the body by virtuous deeds, worship and devotion, chanting and recitation-austerity, effort and dedicated activity, etc. In all activities paying attention to purity or impurity is involved.
Once intellect decides to tread upon the righteous path now what is required in it, is steadfastness. The mind also should not get wavered on one issue or the other. That the mind should remain tranquil and stable in the eventuality of its meeting with the pleasant or unpleasant; this is steadiness. That the external sensual objects do not keep on attracting the mind or understand it in this manner that the mind associating with the senses should not be driven towards sensual pleasures; it should remain inclined towards the delight of the Self. This is self-control.
