O Arjun! Whatever moving or unmoving beings are born know them all to be born from the union of the field and the knower of the field.

💬 Commentary English

The Blessed Lord appears to insist that the memory be maintained that this section deals basically with differentiation between the field and its knower, and to grasp them in their true nature. The various means of identifying the divine truth have been described. The visible world is of name and form for most of the time. Inert and conscious objects and beings are there. Whatever is apparent the thoughts get confined to that only, that only appears to be true and conscient. The illusion of consciousness in inert objects mars all the efforts being made for upliftment. When the disposition is fixed on the inert or is entangled in this illusion then who will perceive the divine truth? That is why here a clear indication is given.

The field in itself has no entity. When it associates with the knower of the field or the soul then it comes into existence. Whether it may be a tree, creeper, mountain etc. unmoving objects or water beings, terrestrial beings, those who move in the skies, or it may the gods, humans, animals or birds which are moving beings, without the knower of the field or the Supreme they have no existence. This has been mentioned somewhere as lower and higher nature and elsewhere has been spoken of as a straight and clear divine principle by stating that the entire world of beings owes its existence to Me, their origin, dissolution is all in Me and by Me. In summary, the sight should be centred on the knower of the field, i. e. on consciousness not in inertness.

The ensuing verse is a clear wonderful inspiration of this point of view-
