Let your conscience differentiate between beings & non being, truth & untruth, right & wrong. Maintain state of balance in all odd-even situations and try to attain Stith Pragya -a non deflective state is the core teaching of second chapter.
The first chapter is the foundation of the beautiful palace in the form of the Gita. Some people are of the opinion that the first chapter was not required as there is not a single statement of the Lord in the chapter, nor any message or sermon. The entire chapter contains only an incoherent chatter of Arjun. This viewpoint may seem to be correct to some extent but Arjun at this point of time is a mental patient.
He is not in his natural self. This kind of an incoherent chatter may naturally take place in such a state. In any case the patient will have to describe his condition before the doctor; it is also desirable to do so. Treatment is possible then. Without listening to the patient, without knowing the ailment, what kind of treatment will the doctor prescribe him and how will he prescribe him? One statement is true that the first chapter is not just a mere incoherent muttering of Arjun but as if a mental patient is describing and illustrating his state to the doctor.
Actually this kind of malady is not that of Arjun only; Arjun is just a mere representative. This mental ailment is universal. In the present age, this is a serious, complicated and a threatening challenge. This is the reason why that inspiration received from the Gita is more relevant and appropriate to the present times compared to the age when the Gita was sung. Then only Arjun became victim of this mental ailment. Delusion, grief and then he was subject to dejection. This kind of situation appears to be taking an extensive form now. The delusion caused by materialism and tension here, there and everywhere, anxiety, restlessness, dilemma, unhappiness, grief, fear are creating an atmosphere of despair.
The new discoveries of science made every now and then for progress are praiseworthy; but other aspect consisting of the social and worldly angle is not being looked into. Why are day by day tension, grief, ailment or restlessness, suicides on the increase? Why despite having everything does humanity feel to be defeated? The cause is clear. The cause because of which everything exists, in whose hands the reins of the body (chariot) rests and also the governance of the all three worlds, the vision does not go there because it is perplexed. The vision is centred and confined to the world.
