💬 Commentary English

It has been time and again been emphasized that the Gita is not a scripture just for narration, not a scripture which is restricted to just reading and hearing. The basic objective of the Gita is to draw a person to the highest state. For this very reason the Lord provides motivation time and again, generously describes the means; even in the means adopted there is no narrowness; absolute liberality. Observe it in the present context.

The goal is the experience of the divine truth. The paths are several. Some experience through the means of meditation. Meditation is the means of gathering up of scattered mental propensities. Just the steadiness of the seating posture is not meditation, it is just an aid to meditation. Meditation is the stability of the mind. That is why in the 11th verse of the sixth chapter of the Gita while the describing the seating posture it has been stated in the 12th verse of the same chapter-'tattre kagram manah kritvah' while sitting on that seat make your mind stable. Seated in that posture makes your mind single pointed. The divine truth is existent but the movement of the mind does not allow it to be experienced. Concentrate your mind; the state of experience will evolve on its own.

'Anye sankhyena yogena' Some reach this state by the means of Sankhya Yoga. What is meant by Sankhya here is the ability to discern between the real and the unreal. To discriminate between existence-non existence, sentient-insentient, Soul-nature. Existence and sentience is that of the Lord. The world in itself is unreal and inert. The result of endearment to the inert or attachment to the unreal is sorrow. Consciousness is Truth and liking for it is delight. By thinking in this manner harmonize your mind with the Lord! By adopting these means the state of meditation and then that of experience will develop on its own. 'Karmayogena capare'-some attain this state by means of yoga of action. To present the yoga of action as an independent means in the section on the yoga of knowledge is a pleasant surprise. While performing action the goal should be the attainment of union with the Lord. There should be no arrogance of doership nor attachment to the result of action. The inner state should be of that of the immersion in the self. The outward attitude should be that of the senses interacting with their objects or the attributes interacting with the attributes. Previous accumulated impressions have to be exhausted and further more, the goal being the realisation and abidance in the divine nature, the actions should become a means for the attainment of that state.

Once again it is clarified that actions are not the cause of bondage nor a hurdle! Actions can also become the means of experiencing the divine truth. Perform actions in this spirit. There is a necessity for a bit of caution. This is the magnanimity of the philosophy of the Gita. For the attainment of the same goal, in accordance with the different mental states of the beings different means are explained! In the ensuing verse there is another example of the liberality of the means.
