Chapter 13 — Kshetra Kshetrayagya Vibhag Yoga

mahābhūtānyahańkāro buddhiravyaktameva ch

indriyāņi daśaikam ch pañca cendriyagocarāḥ

🕉 English Translation

Mahataty panch aur ahankar yeh,

Buddhi aur prakriti karan jo hain.

Dason indriyan aur mann ek bhi,

Panchon vishaya indriyon ke sabhi.

📜 Translation English

The five great elements, egoism, intellect and also the unmanifest; and the ten senses, one mind and five objects of senses, i. e. sound, touch, form, taste and smell.

💬 Commentary English

The Lord had given assurance of telling in brief the nature of the field and the knower of field in the third verse of this chapter. In the fourth verse He discussed their substantiation by sages, Vedas and the Brahmn sutras. Now here is discussed the nature of the field!

An extremely subtle analysis this is! It is required to be understood in depth! A unique glimpse of the vastness in summary! Five Great Elements-space, fire, water, air and earth! These Five Great Elements are not just in the outer nature; they are also a part of the structure and state of the body. Intellect, mind and egoism have an important role in the field, though they are all the deformations of the nature. Intellect is entangled in the uncertainties of decisions; mind is involved in the resolutions and counter-resolutions and egoism is the cause of this uncertainty and perplexity. Behind this is the unmanifest, i. e. the original nature (in subtle form); behind this apparent world of nature is its source; the original subtle nature with the help of which the Supreme creates the creation and also the bodies. This reference has been given several times in the Gita.

Ten senses out of which five are organs of actions and the other five are sensual of perception! Hands, feet, speech (vak), genital and anus-these are five organs of action. Ears, skin, eyes, tongue and nose-they are the organs of perception and further are the five objects of the senses-sound, touch, form, taste and smell! Elaborating on the field the Lord says-
