(The Yoga of Three-Fold Classification Of Attributes)

The Gita is a scripture which is supremely mysterious, small but full of deep philosophical principles. Wherever the subject related to self-elevation was taken up, the Blessed Lord has made a meaning effort to clarify every aspect of it from every point of view. In that attempt He has given at places logic, arguments and at other illustrations too. Sometimes one feels wonderstruck that in such a small scripture so much has been said about elevation in life and attainment of the Supreme.

In the 13th chapter the differentiation between the field and its knower was narrated. Every aspect of it was unfolded. In between the description of the attributes was also taken up. Nature is endowed with three-fold attributes. By remaining in contact with these attributes the embodied being takes birth in good or bad wombs. What is the state of the transcendence of these three attributes and what is the nature of the great soul who has transcended these attributes? To clarify in detail these issues is the purpose of the commencement of the 14th chapter. That is why the title of this chapter is the Three-Fold Classification of Attributes.

The section is of the yoga of knowledge. In the 13th chapter, the signs of the knowledge have been clarified and the conclusion of the chapter was with the statement requiring the use of the eye of wisdom to see and know the reality. The Lord is beginning the 14th chapter also with the discussion of knowledge. There are several categories of knowledge and amongst them the highest knowledge is the one which is capable of making one realise the Supreme Truth, not any other knowledge. Discussing this very Supreme knowledge with His dear disciple Arjun the Blessed Lord says.
