tam tathā kṛpayāviṣṭama-śrupūrṇākulekṣaṇam
viṣīdantamidaṁ vākyam-uvāca madhusūdanaḥ

Sanjay said: To him thus overcome by pity, his eyes full of tears and agitation, to that despondent Arjun Lord Madhusudan (Shri Krishna) spoke these words.
The first chapter is the background and introduction of the Gita. The person who is to be treated for his ailment and the cause of the ailment has been made clear. The beginning of the second chapter also describes the symptoms of this ailment in the body, mind and behaviour. Arjun has reached a very pitiable state. The conclusion of the first chapter is with the statement of Sanjay. Sanjay has described the grief-stricken state of Arjun, but when his vision again went towards Arjun he could not contain himself. The beginning of the second chapter also is with the statement of Sanjay. For Arjun the three words have been used 'kripyavishtam'-filled with compassion. Arjun was compassionate by nature. But here, compassion is enveloped by attachment, is under the influence of attachment. A little bit of alcohol in milk does not allow it to protect its purity. Bharat's compassion for the baby deer was not in reality compassion but compassion veiled by attachment and the result is clear in front of everybody.
'Ashrupurnakulakshanam'-eyes filled with tears. The tears did not fall from the eyes, but the eyes became full of tears. Filled with tears, the vision was also blurred. Just not this 'vishidantam'-fully agitated Arjun. Arjun was completely yielding to attachment and grief, almost depressed, wretched and helpless and in straight words pitiable Arjun? O Arjun! What is all this? How strange? That is why all of a sudden the Lord spoke harsh words.
