📜 Translation English

O Dhananjay (winner of wealth)! Hear now the three-fold distinction of the intellect and persistence according to the qualities severally which I am now describing fully.

💬 Commentary English

The three-fold distinction of knowledge, action and doer has been enunciated and has also been understood. But the Gita is not a scripture to be restricted to understanding and making others understand. This is a very appropriate inspiration for the practical life; that is why this special issue now comes to the forefront. Who will be the deciding factor for accepting or rejecting anything? After a decision is made who will persistently pursue what has been accepted? Towards that end the Blessed Lord is providing indication here.

The Intellect is the decisive power. The determination is to be made according to the intellect but only when the intellect too is of sativic nature. The rajasic and the tamasic intellect can make contrary decisions. That is why the Blessed Lord felt that it was necessary to clarify the three distinctions of the intellect. Simultaneously, this too was felt that the three distinctions of persistence will be elucidated so that once correctly determined by the intellect, it might be practised in life in the right manner.
