📜 Translation English

O Best of Bharatas, Arjun! Between renunciation and abandonment, hear from Me first of all My conclusion regarding abandonment as abandonment is differentiated to be of three kinds-satvic, rajasic and tamasic.

💬 Commentary English

In the Gita's sermon nowhere does the Blessed Lord appear to be obstinately insistent on His own expression. His stand is naturally liberal; in His sermon too this attitude is widely evident. Omnipotent, Universal Governor of all Lord Shri Krishna could have stated His stand insistently. He did not do so, He presented the matter in open manner, put forward the opinions of the learned ones. Thereafter, He stated His own stand.

The question raised by Arjun is for knowing the essence of renunciation and abandonment separately. To understand and make one understand, the real essence of these two is by no means easy. In this context there exist different streams of thought, out of which some have been discussed previously by the Blessed Lord. Now on this issue what is the conclusion of the Lord? Out of the two the first abandonment is taken up. On grasping in right perspective the issue of abandonment it becomes easier to understand renunciation in true sense. That is why the subject of abandonment is taken up first! The Krishna of the Gita is indicating the threefold differentiation of abandonment; the analysis of which will follow in the succeeding verses.
