Chapter 6 — Atma Sanyam Yoga

Verse 44
🕉 Original Sanskrit Shloka

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hyavaśa'pi sah

jijñāsurapi yogasya śabdabrahmātivartate

🕉 English Translation

Sanskar pichhle dikhate hain jor,

Khich jata hain mann prabhu ki oar.

Kahe vedo mein jo karma hain sakaam,

Detaa na jigyasu un par hain dhyan.

📜 Translation English

The one (born in the house of prosperous persons) who even though he has fallen from yoga and is helpless will by virtue of his former practice undoubtedly be drawn towards the Lord.

💬 Commentary English

And such a seeker of yoga of even-mindedness transcends the fruits of desireful action described in the Vedas. In the previous verse, the description of the person fallen from yoga is given, who takes birth in the family of yogis, who have withdrawn themselves from the worldly indulgences. Here the discussion is about that person who has fallen from yoga but remained in heaven, etc. higher worlds for very many years and then takes birth in the family of the pure and the righteous. In such a person, the traces of attraction towards worldly indulgences persist, and then he resides in heaven, etc. higher worlds for long periods of time and thereafter takes birth in the family of wealthy persons (though of righteous conduct) where there is abundance of worldly objects.

Despite all these qualities the Blessed Lord says that he does not suffer from fall. The former practice does not allow him to get involved in worldly affairs. The impressions of the past practice of yoga show their influence, due to which even in such environment his mind is drawn towards the Supreme.

Arjun inquired about the state of fall. Whether the person who has fallen from yoga suffers downslide or not The encouraging spirit is shown by the Krishna of the Gita:

The spirit of the enquiry of the path of yoga, if in one is awakened, even he is able to dissociate himself from the desireful actions and their resultant fruits. Then here, the matter pertains to the person fallen from yoga. The one who on practising yoga could not attain perfection. He has already practised. The wealth of accumulated pure sattvic impressions gained through practising is with him, then how the question of his being involved in indulgences can arise? He will progress on the journey from indulgences to yoga; he will never suffer from downfall in any situation. Take this for sure, Parth! His every step will take him further and further. The following verse also substantiates this stand-
