The Blessed Lord said:

O Son of Pritha! Neither in this world nor in the world beyond does he suffer destruction, because O beloved! The one who strives to do good never comes to a deplorable end.

💬 Commentary English

Arjun has raised upon this question as a representative of the embodied being who wants to tread the path of self-upliftment. He is imbued with faith, has started treading up on the path of self-upliftment but has not reached the culmination; his body dropped off; what will be his ultimate end? Whether his state will be of neither belonging to this world nor the next. The Blessed Lord provides an encouraging motivation-No Parth! It is not so at all. He will neither be destroyed in this world nor in the world beyond.

If one has not reached the culmination in this world, it is no cause for disappointment. Whatever has been done in the divine spirit can never come to an end. It is the real treasure of the embodied being. It is of benefit in this world, in the form of mental strength and purification of inner-self is certain. Whatever has been done, it must have contributed to the weakening of the influence of the accumulated sinful actions. Thick veils must have thinned for which the benefit will be drawn later. Have faith. The earning from keeping religious company, service, rememberance of the Lord never goes waste neither in this world nor in the next.

The world snatches away everything when the body drops and the possessions are left here. Further more, when we came into this world at least the body was there even though we were empty-handed; but on departing from the world, the time the destroyer does not allow even the body to be carried away with us. But take for sure that even at that time none can take away the earnings emanating from selfless deeds. That goes along with the being. At that time when anyone of world or any thing does not give company, this treasure of faith and spiritual accomplishments is the only companion.

There is never any non-existence of Truth and none has the power to destroy the truth-such indications have on several occasions, been given by the preacher of the Gita in his divine speech. This too has been clarified in the Gita that any righteous action done for the True Lord is termed as truth itself.

'Prasaste karmani tatha sacchabdah parth yujyate' (Gita 17/26). This is a glorious inspiration which will generate fresh energy amongst the pilgrims treading upon the path of self-upliftment-'na hi kalyankrtkasciddurgatim tata gacchati'. The one enagaged in good never comes to woe. This is the splendour of the path of spirituality.

In worldly sense, the actions which are performed by entertaining worldy desires, longings and attachments neither provide mental peace nor do they accompany us in the world beyond and also make the inner-self a dumping yard for impressions or impurities and agitation. But have faith! Whatever time has been utilised in self-upliftment will never go waste, whatever steps have been taken on this path will never be fruitless, and whatever actions have been dedicated towards this end will never be the cause of fall. It will also prop up and uplift the person who is falling.

'Svalpamapyasya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat' (Gita 2/40). Even a little practice in this regard will protect one from the great fear. It has been proved in the life of several persons. How was Ajamil salvaged...the eagle could also attain spiritual perfection... for becoming a contributor in the divine work of Lord Ram. Sage Bharat even on assuming the body of a deer, remained imbued with divine emotions because there is no destruction of such deeds, nor here nor further nor is there any probability of downfall! Continue practising with full faith. In every situation it is a gainful enterprise, not a losing proposition in any way.

After leaving the body what would be the fate? The preacher of the Gita is elucidating-
