Na palan karein shastra ki viddhi,

It is the speciality of Gita to expound firmly what it desires to state, keeping in mind the possibility of each subtlety and then proceeding further. The issue of the supreme goal has already been stated in the previous verse. Prior to that connected with this issue, a straight and clear warning has also been given. Now once again, caution is being provided.
In the form of righteous action sacrifice, charity, etc. are being performed; it is good to do so. But from the point of view of attitude this is a whimsical conduct. Just what comes to the mind is considered right and good! The scriptures prompt one to abandon arrogance to perform action in the spirit of sacrifice and the attitude of surrender, but here just for nourishing arrogance sacrificial actions, etc. are undertaken. From the spiritual viewpoint the scriptures ordain the performance of actions without the expectation of fruits; but they are done keeping fruits in mind right from the beginning.
The issue remains the same! The reasons which have caused the inner state to become impure they still prevail inside! These undertakings become mere external actions. The problem lies inside, but no attention is paid to it. The accumulated impressions remain accumulated inside. Due to fresh desires and egoism they get further enhanced; the inner state continues to be vitiated; filled with impurities, then how can perfection be achieved? In the realm of spirituality, the most important perfection or success lies in making the inner state free of impurities. While the impurities persist, agitation will accompany it. This is the state of unhappiness. Agitation will continue to persist inside. When these impurities and agitation deepen, then they will take the form of veil! In the presence of veil there is no question of attaining the highest status. There is a need to understand this well.
