Those humans tied down by hundreds of ties of hope, given over to lust and anger, keep on making effort for hoarding wealth by unjust means for sensual enjoyments.

💬 Commentary English

To what is life given? This is an issue which is important and deserves a serious thought. If life is dedicated to the Lord then the path of liberation from bondage will be paved. If this is not so, then life will be governed by propensities! The subjugation to dispositions is an invitation for bringing oneself into bondage and coming and going from this world.

In the sequence of the description of demoniac qualities this is an aspect which deserves a grave thought! If there are desires then anger will be there too; in life the predominance of these propensities will keep on growing. If sometimes a desire is fulfilled then other new desires related to it will arise! If the desire is not fulfilled and some obstacle arises then sometimes it will give rise to anger and at other times to a new hope. Hope; sometimes hope against hope, the mind will keep on being entangled in the world of desires! Sometimes for the fulfilment of hopes and desires, right means will be used; if it is not possible then wrong-illegal means will be resorted to! Wealth and sensual objects related to it should be obtained; the goal is limited to the accumulation of these-then how can attention be paid to what is right or wrong or fair or unfair? My desires should be fulfilled by all means-this very issue is more openly analyzed in the following verse.
