Arjun said:

O Krishna! You are praising the renunciation of action and then Yoga of Action. Therefore, tell me conclusively in which one of the two lies my welfare.

💬 Commentary English

The ongoing discussion is still Yoga of Action. But in the fourth chapter along with the motivation for actions the importance of knowledge has also been highlighted. All actions culminate into knowledge (Gita 4/33). Whilst saying this in the previous chapter the discussion on need, utility, meaningfulness, attainment, abidance in knowledge was prominent, which led to the springing of this natural inquiry in Arjun's mind. Otherwise too, such an inquiry can arise in the mind of any seeker, inquirer after hearing and reading this.

The title of the fifth chapter is renunciation of action. From this viewpoint this question at the commencement of the chapter was necessary, timely and apt in this context. By raising this question Arjun in actuality has done a favour to every reader of the Gita; because by this question it will become evident that what in reality is renunciation or giving up of action? Otherwise, by and large the inspirations from the Gita would have been construed in a manner suiting one's propensities and the Gita would be taken as the scripture which prompts one or causes one to abandon action or it is taken as a scripture meant for ascetics, thanks to Arjun for this question which is beneficial and of wide utility.

Arjun was already talking of abandoning the action in the form of war and resorting to ascetism. It appeared as if the Lord was endorsing his view. For this reason also Arjun did not take time in raising this question. Whatever may be the case by hearing the sermons of the Gita the obstinacy of Arjun is weakening. Arjun now is not appearing to be excessively stubborn towards his stance. That is why along with seeking clarification for his dilemma he is clearly stating-'etayorekam tanme bruhi suniscitam'-renunciation of action or Yoga of Action-out of the two whichever is beneficial for me Tell me, O Murari!

The same kind of attitude has been displayed by Arjun in the second chapter-'yacchreyah syanniscitam bruhi tanme' (Gita 2/7). This is a good, healthy and motivating indication. The inspirations from the Gita are in reality meant for this purpose only. Every person engaging in the study of the Gita, the devotee of the Gita should examine the inspirations provided in the Gita and in this manner. Whether the rigidity of one's view is loosening or not and whether in place if egoistic intellect, the attitude of self-surrender, is growing or not. With this attitude of self-examination move further. Observe the reply of the Blessed Lord-
