The embodied being belongs to the Lord only, but the external allurements of maya (illusion) separate the being from the divine. The decisions of intellect and thoughts of the mind, the movement of the senses, in summary, the total state of life, everything, gets limited to the world only because of which the inner state is reduced to a heap of dirt which results in 'punarapi jananam punirapi maranam', i. e. coming and going from this world again and again. In this verse the being is being prompted towards attaining that state which he should do, which is worth doing; and which he should be doing, the state which the being should attain, without which there is no meaningfulness of life and without which it is not possible to get freedom from the cycle of birth and death. This is what is meant by this inspiration from the Gita.
Intellect is the decisive power. Resolution should be one-while remaining in the world, engaging in the worldly conduct but the ultimate attainable goal and destination is the Supreme Sacchidanand (Truth, Consciousness and Bliss). Whatever kind of world is given to us and to whatever extent it is given, it is all due to the grace of Lord Krishna or previous destiny! I have to meet my Govind, the one whom I adore, the All-Pervading and abiding in the heart. Such thoughts should prevail in the mind, because the mind is a flow of thoughts. The world should not obsess the mind! Whatever is happening is His play; whatever is moving is due to His power, whatever is being attained is due to His Blessings; whatever will be attained will be His bounty! The mind can never wander anywhere else then.
The oneness of the mind and intellect with the Supreme is the state of abidance in the Supreme. Here the description does not relate to the state of the body and its actions; neither can it be so. If the decisions and thoughts relate to the Supreme then the state naturally is of existing in the Supreme. 'Tatprayanah'-in the refuge of that Lord. There is nothing which is ours; there is nothing which is in our control. Everything is His and under His control, as he does or causes to be done; joy is derived from that only because we belong to Him, are dependent on Him; wherever He keeps us and in whatever state-everything is His pleasure.
Think now where the sin is? Where is the involvement in sin? Turning away from the Supreme pushes one towards sinful actions. In such a state the previously accumulated sins are washed away, the mind and intellect being immersed in the Supreme there is no question of the accumulation of fresh sins. The inner state is purified; then why will there be the question of birth and death and the cycle of coming and going from this world? Where is the abidance in the Lord while one is alive? After giving up the body the maintenance of the same oneness and union-this is the Supreme state, Supreme status, blessing and fulfilment of life and the feeling of accomplishment!
In the practical life what will be this state of existence? Through the medium of a very thought-provoking and important verse the Lord is clarifying-
