The one who is not contemplating on the external sensual indulgences, shutting out all external contacts and concentrating the vision between the two eyebrows and equalizing the outgoing and incoming breath moving within the nostrils, whose senses, mind and intellect are under his control, who is devoted to liberation and the one who is ever free from desire, fear and wrath, such a sage is liberated forever.

On the spiritual path there is importance of all aids like hearing, contemplating, reading and reciting, chanting, austerity, pilgrimage. All of them contribute to spiritual progress. But for bringing in fulfilment in the spiritual path, meditation is a must. In reality, meditation is a good outcome of all these means, is the essence of all of them. By practice of meditation one will be able to evaluate clearly one's inner state. For this reason before concluding the fifth chapter, in the discussion of the thoughts on the Sankhya yogi, the Lord is trying to give this state the firmness in practical conduct. The Gita does not approve of mere lip service. The implementation i. e. the practical aspect is taken care of simulteaneously. The importance of the practice of meditation cannot be done away with! The external world should be shut out and it should not penetrate in the inner thoughts. The world in itself is neither a bondage nor a hurdle. When the external world enters the inner state in the form of thoughts that creates the bondage and the hurdle! For this reason is the far-sightedness of the Gita-first of all, this hurdle should be got rid of! The external world should not be allowed to enter the inmost one. Empty yourself out from inside. If the vision wanders here and there, when and how can there be concentration? That is why the vision should be fixed in the midst of the two eyebrows-where the 'tilak' is put on the forehead. This point should be made the point of concentration. There should be no disbalance in the incoming and outgoing breath; bring it into an equal state.
Draw the inhaling breath (apana) from your left nostril. Gradually exhale the breath (pranavayu) from the right nostril. Then draw in the breath from the right nostril and exhale the breath in a comfortable manner from the left nostril. Now if in a subtle manner any mantra is being recited in the mind then it will enhance the effectiveness of the whole exercise.
The restlessness of the senses, mind and intellect should be resolutely contained. Nothing without this would be effective. Meditation will be reduced to a mere sitting posture, just confined to sitting and getting up! How will then become possible-'mokshaparayanah'? From the commencement there should be firmness of resolve! Bondage is not the goal, the goal is liberation. Bondage is the nature of the world and liberation the nature of the divine! Whole dependence should be on the divine! This will end all kinds of confusion and there will be no worry of the future:
Be reflective! Understand the reality of the situation! In discord, fickle mindedness, instability how many births have been frittered away? This perplexity should no longer persist. Free yourself from the web and snares of desire! When the dependence is on the Lord, abidance is in His spirit; then why is the fear? If one is to get angry then it should be with oneself! If the mind does not show such eagerness and firmness then anger should be towards that. Salvation in such state would be in one's grasp. Side by side now and here is encashed, the religion and it is not something to be achieved at a future date like some debt to be recovered in future. No assumption or imagination of the state after death. A living truth, the truth of this earthly level! Come and let us take a step forward towards this practical reality! Experience the emotions and affection of the Gita's preacher towards yourself and resolve through the practice of meditation to achieve such a state.
