💬 Commentary English

The Supreme cannot be confined to any definition. Definition is always confined to limits while the Supreme is the infinite power. This verse of the Gita is not meant to provide a definition of the Supreme. But it is provided as a means to give an indication of His nature so that it may be brought into contemplation or to maintain it in the canvas of memory constantly.

'Kavim'-the Supreme is Eternal, is Omnipresent; therefore nothing of the past, present or future is hidden from Him; He is Omniscient; He knows everything. This is a warning as well as an inspiration. The warning is for protecting oneself from evils and an inspiration for engaging oneself in good thoughts and deeds, because He is observing everything and knows it too.

'Puranam'-The Supreme is ancient. When the creation was not there then who was there? Just the Supreme. Creation has a beginning and, therefore, an end too. The Lord is Immortal, because He is without beginning, He is Eternal and Unending.

'Anusasitaram' In the form of body, mind and intellect and in the wider form of such a vast nature all are performing their own functions under His governance and discipline. Birth and death, the dispensation of the fruits of action, the rising and setting of the sun, rainfall or no rainfall, etc. all departments are those of the Lord. He is the Governor of all; do not allow your arrogance to come to the forefront! To live life in accordance with the governance of the Supreme gives meaningfulness and carefreeness.

'Anoraniyamsam'-whatever is being viewed through the eyes is concrete. Supreme is subtler than molecules and atoms; He is the ultimate limits of subtlety. He is therefore, not a subject of the physical eyes. The subtle state of intellect can only experience Him-'buddhigrahyamatindriyam' (Gita6/21)! The contemplation of the gross world will make the tendencies gross too; it will take one away from the Lord and this will cause distancing from Him! By dwelling in the thought of the subtler than the subtlest divine, will make the one predisposed to experience Him.

'Sarvasya dhtaram'-After creating the world the Lord has not sat far away from it in one corner. By maintaining the entire world and all the beings within Himself, He is existent inside as well as outside. From ants to elephants and from the ordinary human being to Brahmaji He is the nourisher and maintainer of all. For this reason there should be neither arrogance nor anxiety. That only if I perform an action will it be accomplished and otherwise how can it be made possible, if it does not happen? Such thoughts should not be entertained. Effort should be made but without egoism and without anxiety.

'Acintyarupam' That the thoughts should not be centred on the mortal world, it is good that they should be directed towards divine spirit, but this thought should not be entertained that the Lord is the subject-matter of thought! In fact, He is beyond the reach of the body, mind and intellect. Just as the right use of the senses lies in their being towards God but the Lord Himself transcends the senses; the same divine thoughts in the mind will deliver one from the worldly cares; but even where the thoughts are silenced, there is the manifestation of the Lord!

'Adityavarnam'-The nature of the Supreme is effulgent like the sun! In fact, the radiance of the sun is also a part of the effulgence of the Supreme. The Supreme is self-effulgent. The supreme lights of the lights, the supreme luminaries of the luminaries, in the body he is the illuminator of the mind, intellect and the senses and basis of all illuminations of the sun, moon, stars, fire and each and every particle of the creation.

'Tamasah parsatat'-transcending the darkness in the form of ignorance, beyond the reach of ignorance in every manner.

Dear reader, grasp the profundity of the verse. Discern the inherent divinity in it. Being beyond all, all-pervading, vast, impartial and an uninvolved power the Blessed Lord for the sake of our memory, has expressed Himself in such simple, straight and clear terms! In the Gita consisting of seven verses this verse holds an important place. Give it full importance in your daily routine. The way to self-elevation will become easy! By using the word 'Amanusmaredyah' the preacher of the Gita has indicated the manner of remembering Him. Now follows the manner of His remembrance and its resultant fruit from His Blessed mouth:
