Chapter 8 — Akshar Brahmn Yoga

Verse 16
🕉 Original Sanskrit Shloka

abrahmabhuvanällokāḥ punaravartino'rjuna

māmupetya tu kaunteya punarjanma na vidyate

🕉 English Translation

Brahmlok tak lok hain jitney bhi,

Pahuch kar wahan jeev lautey yahin.

Magar mujhko Arjun paa letaa jo,

Na ava gaman mein kabhi aaye woh.

📜 Translation English

O Arjun! Right from the world of Brahmn all worlds are subject to return, that is on reaching there one has to again return to this world. But O Son of Kunti! On reaching Me there is no rebirth imposed.

💬 Commentary English

A clear description of the state of coming and going from this world and the state of liberation from it! Liberation is associated with the attainment of the Lord. Without this state emancipation is not possible. The embodied being is an indestructible portion of the Lord. Merging of the part in the whole is the state of liberation! The one to whom the embodied belongs, if He attained and is merged with Him then why and how will there be the cycle of coming and going from the world? Till the time this state is not attained and this part of the Supreme does not become one with Him and remains limited to worldly desires, the coming and going from the world will definitely remain! For the fulfilment of desires to make effort, to propitiate the deities and otherwise too to worship the gods, helps acquire virtues and these virtuous deeds and the worship of gods will enable one to reach the higher worlds; but the cycle of coming and going from the world will continue.

Through virtuous deeds the higher worlds can be acquired, but on exhausting the virtuous deeds-'ksine punye martyalokam visanti' (Gita 9/21) and on exhausting its merits return to the world of the mortals is certain, once again in this world. The ultimate peace of the embodied being is being with the Lord. Devoid of that the embodied being keeps wandering and getting hindered hither and thither. When the embodied being's mind gets absorbed in the Supreme then the long-awaited desire gets fulfilled and then why should he go here and there? If the bee gets nectar from the flower and gets stuck there whether the flower closes or withers, the bee is engrossed there. The embodied being meets 'raso vai sah' and himself became of that nature, now whatever may happen it is immaterial. Even if the body gets dropped, let it be so. The embodied being becomes one with That; this is what is called freedom from the subjection to coming and going from this world. In this state, how can the question of rebirth arise? This is what is called Supreme peace, Supreme status, Supreme state and Supreme abode; everything else keeps departing after coming and coming after departure.
