💬 Commentary English

This is a significant aspect of the inspirations from the Gita-'Shraddhavamllabhate jnanam'-the man imbued with faith gains knowledge. What has been read in the authentic scriptures, whatever has been heard from the knowers of Essential Truth and whatever the Lord has said-having faith in them, is as if experiencing it directly! Then this faith should be there that the grace of the Lord will be with me; the acquisition of knowledge is possible with His Blessings. The dedication to means with this attitude is the basis of attaining knowledge. Engaging in various spiritual practices without the slightest faith and reverence, will not lead to the attainment of knowledge. In the last verse of the 17th chapter the Gita's sermonizer has stated in straight and clear words-charity given without faith, austerities performed or any other spiritual practice done is falsity. It is of no benefit in this world or the world beyond.

The foundation stone of spiritual journey is faith. For this reason whether it is undertaking a consecrated action as yoga (3/31) or fulfilment of devotion (12/20), abidance in knowledge (4/39) and the benefit of hearing Gita (18/70)-in each of these the Krishna of the Gita gives priority to faith. There are several examples where the ritualistic aspect of the means used were not very strong, but the dedication of the faith was absolute. Knowledge was acquired and upliftment attained. The acid test of faith is 'Tatparah'-there can be no attainment by sheer talk. Faith should not be limited to mere words and speech. If faith is there then there will be eagerness to take to the spiritual path. Along with 'tatparah' there is another state of self-examination 'sanyetendriyah' (control over senses). If there is eagerness in the pursuit, the movement of the senses will not be towards sensual objects; it will be selfwards. Whatever is necessary will be attained through God's will, His grace. This is the state of 'labhate jnanam' revelation of knowledge! If there is attainment of knowledge and experience of the same, then the Supreme serenity will not be away from one. That goes side by side because the sun is an aggregation of light.
