tatra sattvam nirmalatvātprak-āśakamanāmayam
sukhasańgena badhnāti jñānasańgena cânagha
Satoguna toh nirmal hai svabhav se,
Vikaron rahit karta prakash yeh.
Inana aur sukh ki hai asakti jo,
Bandhe usi se yeh dehi ko.
O sinless Arjun! Out of the three qualities, sattva being pure is the giver of illumination and free from deformities, it puts the embodied being into bondage by attachment to happiness and knowledge.

Satoguna is superior to the other two qualities and modes. It is an aid on the path of self-elevation as well as a hurdle too. Satoguna is by nature pure and has the capacity to purify the self. Interest in spirituality, keenness for self-elevation and the dedication towards virtuous deeds are the signs of satoguna. All these are states which are in themselves pure and can also purify. In straight terms where there is satva, purity is bound to be there. If there is purity then there is no question of deformities either. In satoguna there is no ignorance, no darkness but just luminosity. The darkness of ignorance exists in rajoguna and tamoguna; satoguna is luminous by itself-
By satoguna natural happiness and knowledge too is attained. Whenever a good deed is performed, study of scriptures, attending religious congregation, remembrance of the Lord, rituals and sacrifices, etc. by the performance of all this happiness will be experienced. Further advancement in this state will lead to expire may be inner radiance, vision, sound or some special experience of joy; the embodied being can get stuck at this stage. He takes this happiness to be the ultimate. Or by attending religious congregation, studying scriptures, or the acquisition of a little spiritual knowledge or knowledge of ritualistic worship and recitation can lead to the development of attachment towards it and arrogance may arise due to it.
This state can be invariably seen. The seekers are mostly found to be stuck at this stage. Many have this arrogance that I am such an old participant in religious congregation; I perform a lot of ritualistic worship and read the scriptures; I do such a lot of service to others! Even while performing virtuous deeds the bondage will remain as it is. That is why, beware. This verse is an inspiration and a warning too.
In the following verse see the state of rajoguna-
