Arjun! Badha ho satoguna hee jab,
Jo dehdhari mrityu ko prapt ho tab
Toh paschaat marne ke jaye vahan,
Uttam karma karne vale jahan.
Rajoguna ke badhne pe hee jo mare,
Karma karne valon mein veh janam le.
Tamoguna ke badhne par marta hai jo,
Janam neech yoni mein hee uska ho.
When the being meets with death when satoguna is on the rise, then he attains the spotless and divine worlds of those who have performed virtuous deeds. Meeting with death when rajoguna prevails he is born amongst those attached to action and when there is predominance of tamoguna at the time of death, he takes birth in the wombs of the beings of low category.

As the disposition is, so will be the attainment. The same rule applies after giving up the body. Where will the embodied being go after death? What will be the state? In this verse is given a logical answer with complete reasoning. The irrefutable state of rebirth is in accordance with one's disposition. Whichever is the attribute predominating at the time of death, in accordance with that will be the future status, and according to it will be the next birth! First, let us see the state of predominance of satoguna-
According to the spirit of 'sadaatadbhavbhavita' (Gita 8/6) the embodied being will attain the destination as per the state of its attributes at the time of death. Satoguna is by nature pure. By bringing the pure activities of satoguna into practice the self becomes pure. Being in religious company, service, remembrance of the Lord, singing of His glories, reading of scriptures, sacrifice, charity, austerity, etc. are all satvic actions. They remove the impurities of the self and purifies it, and in the pure inner-self is felt lightness. Light objects move upwards; that is why such an embodied being takes birth in the higher worlds. As the inner-self is pure, so the attainment is of pure worlds.
Similarly on the prevalence of rajoguna and tamoguna are different states in accordance with the gunas.
The predominance of rajoguna along with greed and desire, etc. causes excessive passion for work. If actions are desire-driven, then at the time of death some of desires remain unfulfilled. For the fulfilment of such desires such an embodied being takes again human birth. As the human birth is the birth of action, in the human birth too the further difference is as to what kind of residual past impressions or desires remain-accordingly will be the next birth.
With tamoguna are associated low types of tendencies and actions of base nature. Neither are the food habits good nor is the behaviour and conduct! In the propensities and actions are found the full dominance of beastly tendencies. That is why the further birth is in the category of birds, beasts or other lowly ones. The Lord must be feeling that as in the present the person prefers beastly nature and emotions, food and behaviour then why he should not be made to take such a birth again. That is why, beware! These verses deserve serious thought. It is extremely imperative to protect oneself from tamoguna. Beware of rajoguna too and progress towards satoguna, because:
