Chapter 12 — Bhakti Yoga

🕉 Original Sanskrit Shloka

anapekşaḥ śucirdakşa udāsīno gatavyathah

sarvārambhaparityägi yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyalı

🕉 English Translation

Asha rahit shudh hai jo sadaa,

Udaseen dukhon se choota hua.

Chatur kartapan ka na abhimaan hai,

Pyara hai mujhko mera bhakt veh.

📜 Translation English

The person who is free from expectations and desires is pure inside and outside, sharp/clever/dexterous, impartial free from sorrow, has given up all undertakings-is dear to me.

💬 Commentary English

Anpeksha: Wanting something from somebody, having expectations, nurturing desires and expectations is a sign of inner weakness, this weakness comes out in the form of expectation/desire from others. The devotee on attaining the fountain head of desires-the Lord attains everything. Deals in the world but without expecting anything from anyone. It is not required also; because everything is attained by itself through the blessings of the Lord. The mind is totally engrossed in experiencing the bliss of the divine.

Suchi: Such absorption does not allow any kind of defects to remain within, nor does it permit to come from outside. The inner state is pure and because of its influence the body and the senses also engage in auspicious activities and maintain their purity. Listening to such great souls, their proximity and even their sight gives the inspiration of purity on its own to others.

Daksh: Such a devotee is not indolent, procrastinating, inactive or careless. He is totally aware of his duty, attainments and goal and dexterous in attaining the same. Here cleverness arrogance, envy, ill-will or worldly means are not to be used for selfish ends but for achieving the goal of precious human life, not available even to the gods.

Udaseen: The devotee's indifference is not to be taken as dejection or gloom. It is unique state of protecting oneself from the entanglements of the circumstances. His state is of watching the waves of the sea knowing full well that entangling oneself in them means drowning, he is always aware and alert to the danger of being drowned in the worldly ocean, and is established in divine state beyond the reach of situation involving dualities.

Gatvaytha: This is a state of remaining protected or released from the state of sorrow. Surrounded by circumstances but not involved in them. Engage in worldly affairs but allowing the mind to get stuck in them! If the mind gets entangled then the circumstances are bound to cause restlessness, will be painful. Resoluteness in devotion towards God can only deliver one from sorrow. There is no other option.

Sarvaarambh parityagi: Not giving up of action but the beginning of any undertaking with a sense of doership and desire for fruit is to be done away with. The work should become a divine pleasure, merely a play or a sport-

The sense of doership and attachment to fruits of action are the impediments in the path of devotion. The work itself is not a hurdle. Inner state is what is considered by God and that is what He likes and that is what is dear to Him. In the context of the state of the devotee time and again the Blessed Lord is giving indications-Yo ma Bhakta Sa mein priya.
