💬 Commentary English

These four verses 8-11 of this chapter exhibit a special affection and love of the Lord for the being. In these verses the role of the Lord is experienced to be that of a loving mother. Just as a mother says to the child, You have to eat something, of fried Indian bread (paratha/puri) is not suitable for you, you can have simple non-fried Indian bread (chapatti) along with pulses, if your health does not allow even this you can have khichri (mix of rice and pulses), have it and satisfy your hunger. If you feel that if at this time even this is not appropriate then have milk and fruit. Without eating how the body will carry on, you must eat. Whatever is suitable for you see for yourself.

Have a look at these verses again. The attainment of godhood is essential. Apart from this there is no other way for elevation. According to your state of mind, choose the means. Either concentrate your mind and intellect on God or make practice you mainstay. Either devote your intellect to God and do all your actions or while doing the actions renounce the fruits of the same. In this verse there is a very clear direction.

The goal is union with God and not indulgence. Then while engaging in action why is the desire for worldly objects? This is an indication of an indulgent intellect. Doing actions with an eye on the result is narrow-mindedness. Extreme joy on attainment and then arrogance. Anger, disappointment and agitation on the frustration of desire! Both states take one away from yoga. Yoga/union is a state of equanimity and peace of mind. Keep the mind restrained. Make the mind understand again and again that yoga is the goal, not indulgence. Indulgence results in agitation, sorrow and suffering. While yoga in itself is bliss. Ask the mind what it wants-peace or agitation. The Mind will desire peace only! Make the mind understand accordingly. Become the teacher of the mind yourself. If the mind is under your control then the senses by themselves will come under control. The senses go towards sensual objects taking the refuge of the mind. When the mind is attracted to yoga then the senses will also follow suit.

Get Engaged in actions. There is no need to renounce them. Do actions with the sense of renunciation. Renounce the desire for the fruits of actions. The fulfilment of desire is not in your hands anyway. Performing actions is only your prerogative. Engage in actions. What will happen and what gains will be had-leave these to God in Whose control these things are. If you need to desire, desire solely for the grace of Lord Krishna! Desire for God's love. Apart from this whatever is being obtained accept it as Shri Krishna' grace. In every situation and circumstance the state of mind should be towards Him only. This is essential. If this happens then rest assured that the attainment of godhood is easy and possible.

This Gita sermonizer has held the Path of Action as an independent means for the attainment of godhood. This is the divinity of the inspirations from the Gita and also their universality. This aspect clarifies that

The Gita is not meant for recluses and people engaged in spiritual discipline away from their homes and families and is not a scripture meant for ascetics. It is the loving mother of all. It has procured means and opportunities for the welfare of all. Renouncing the fruits of action appears to be very simple but it is in itself more unique than other means.
