Who treats friends and enemies, and honour and dishonour equally, and also remains of even mind in the pair of opposites of summer and winter and happiness and sorrow, etc. and is free from attachment. Praise and blame are treated equally by him; he is of reflective mind, and is satisfied with any means of maintaining the body. He is not attached to his place of stay; such a steady minded devote is dear to Me.

The evenness of the mind is the natural state of the devotee. When one is of even mind there no discrimination between a friend an and enemy. If one has a feeling of friendship and enmity, attachment and hatred are bound to be there. As long as attachment and hatred are present, devotion cannot be perfected. Attachment and hatred are the main hurdles on the path of devotion. Invariably it can be seen; even if the devotee does not consider anyone a friend or an enemy still people according to their state of mind consider the devotee as a friend or an enemy. Even in such a situation God's lover does not allow the mind to be vitiated and keeps his outlook equal towards everybody.
Somebody has greatly honoured or revered or somebody has humiliated him; he maintains the eveness of mind. If he is honoured he takes it as the grace of the Lord. What kind of honour is possible for this physical body made up of flesh and bones.? If there is some virtue, that too is not his but God's grace. He does not accept honour but surrenders it to God. Humiliation is also His dispensation. Lest arrogance should arise, God must have done this. Mental evenness, stability and peace protected.
Summer-winter, happiness-sorrow are all the sportive play of the Lord. No preference for any of them. If there is an attachment to friendly emotions then the emotions of enmity are bound to bring agitation. Attachment to honour will cause misery in dishonour. Attachment to winter season will cause discomfort in summer. Attachment to happiness will increase dejection in sorrow; that is why the solution is straight and clear. Sangh vivarjita'-never do have any attachment. Everything is His will, His play, His grace.
It takes all sorts to make the world. Some on seeing the dedication to the Lord will praise and eulogise and some will engage in criticism. In both states the mind should be equanimous. When commendation is received, it is more necessary to be careful. Many a time those who engage in excessive eulogy are indirectly being hostile to us. Eulogy makes us arrogant. That is why Kabir has termed the critic as his friend-Ninda Hamari Jo kare meet hamara soye (The one who criticises us is our friend). A perfect devotee is indifferent to this. His vision is naturally fixed on the divine state.
In this verse, the word 'Mauni used is an indication of inner silence and not oral silence. Towards worldly subjects the mind is in silence but inside it is dwelling in the spiritual emotions of the Lord. Whatever is there is His manifestation, whatever is seen is a show of His play, if anything is received it is His blessings. Everything is His grace. That is why contentment should be in every situation. Getting more or less makes no difference. Whatever has been received is your beneficence. Satisfaction/contentment is only through dwelling in the thoughts of the divine. Therefore one gets more of the world or less, suitable or adverse circumstances; state is the same. Neither happiness is good nor regret,
My Lord whatever you give is the best bet One will in any case reside somewhere. One may have built one's own house or may not have, or may have built but has left it and is residing somewhere else-no attachments and no clinging. It is mine-this kind of feeling should never arise. IntellectNeither happiness is good nor regret,
Neither happiness is good nor regret, totally stable. Steadfast in divine state. Whatever share of the world is there or being received, it has no relation with our desire because it is not our goal. Why would intellect get moved?
The main preference of the Lord is for the dedicated devotee. Full of devotion. The indication is of the effect of the devotion-filled state If the inner state is of devotion, the signs will naturally manifest. The love of God is not for qualities but for the state of dedicated devotion. The conclusion of the chapter is with an extremely encouraging inspiration.
