The world in the form of the pipal tree which has roots above and its branches below is called imperishable. The Vedas are its leaves-this world tree the one who knows, knows the Vedas in the true senses.

The 15th chapter is commencing in a most mysterious manner. The illustration of the pipal tree is given! In the 10th chapter the pipal tree has been given the status of one of His glories by the Lord. The Pipal tree is considered to be the best amongst trees-here in this verse by giving the illustration of the pipal tree, the nature of the world the Lord has been described; but in a unique and magnificent manner and in a style which somewhat startles thinkers and philosophers.
The world is made from the Lord. The primordial cause of the world is the Lord. The status of the Lord is the highest; that is why the roots of this world in the form of the tree are said to be upward. If one sees from the point of view of the position of the world, the Brahmnloka is the highest, and if the state of the body is observed then it will be seen that the mind is above the senses and superior to the mind is intellect and that is which superior, beyond and higher than even intellect is the Self!
Observe any tree; the roots will be found to be downwards and the branches and leaves, etc. upwards. This world tree from this point of view is extremely unique; the roots are above and the branches below. The main part of the tree is its base i. e. the roots. In the tree of the world the main part is the Supreme. From Him the tree of the world expands.
In the form of the substratum the Supreme is above-this is one of the inspirational indications that the status of the Supreme in life is always above and should remain so. The vision should be fixed on the Lord. In every conduct the Lord should get priority, should always be ahead and in front. The world should not be given priority over the Lord. In conduct also this awareness should prevail and along with that the practice of meditation should be maintained in life. While sitting in meditation the thought-process should have an upward movement; extricate it from the impurities of the thoughts of sensual objects. Also, lift it above the uncertainties of intellect and gradually in a easy manner lifting them above that, state immerse it in the spirit of the Self (Gita 6/25). Then this will become a practical experience that the root in the form of the Lord is above.
The world is made from the Lord. First was created Brahmaji and then took place the expansion of creation! These are the very extended branches of the world tree. They are going downwards. Observe your own body! It will become clear-that consciousness is above and hands, legs and other organs in the form of branches are below. The world, otherwise, is not imperishable. Changes accompany it from moment to moment. But here the word 'prahuravyayam' has been used. This world which is compared to the pipal tree is said to be imperishable. At the base is the Lord who is Imperishable. From Him has creation originated! He is the material and efficient cause for it! It has been coming down is from time immemorial. From the point of view of essential truth this world is of the form of the Lord; that is why it is called imperishable. This fact has been expressed here. Root, stem, branches are there but if leaves do not exist then the tree will not look attractive. Leaves are the beauty of the tree. Vedas are the leaves of the world in the form of the tree.
The real beauty of the world are the Vedas. Even though in the Vedas the desire-driven activities are also specially described. Heaven and the means to attain heaven, religious activities which are desire-driven, pleasing the gods-all these are found in the Vedas but even these are essential for beautifying the world tree. Gradually, the Vedas draw the embodied being towards the divine real beauty. In acting with the tradition of the Vedas lies the actual beauty of life and the world. Prohibited actions, though they appear to be externally enamouring, actually create a hollowness inside and take us towards downfall.
The one who grasps this Reality is the knower of the Vedas, i. e. the one who knows the Vedas in essence. The essence of the Vedas is Brahmn. Observe the branches of the free, take benefit of the coolness of its shade, gaze at its beauty; but do not forget that all this is due to its primeval cause. Without the base the tree does not have any existence. Similarly without the Supreme the world has no entity. Give the Lord the highest place in your life. Then only one will be able to grasp the essence, truth and importance of life.
In the following verse is given a more elaborate description of this tree of the world-
