To derive full benefit out of life, it is essential to understand the mind and to make the mind understand and to bring it into the right frame. The entire spiritual effort of life for self-evolution is based on the mind. In what frame and state the mind is in, to have a watch over this is the austerity of the mind.
There should be non-subjection to the circumstances and propensities. Invariably, life goes on under subjection to tendencies and circumstances. The consequence of this is that the mind does not operate as per our desires, but drives us according to itself. This is the weak aspect of life. By acting under the sway of the mind neither will the peace of mind be conserved nor can the mind be controlled nor will there be purity of feelings. The entire play of life will be spoilt. The mind is also an irresponsible child; it is essential to keep under control. Lead life in the world, but not under subjugation to them. Wherever the Lord keeps us and in whatever state one should be happy.
Silence is the meditative mode of the mind. The Gita is the holy scripture which provides inspiration for moving from action towards a higher state. That is why the word 'silence' has not been taken in the context of the austerity of the speech but that of the mind. Do not drain your energies in useless thoughts and worries. Contemplate and meditate on the form, name, attribute and nature of the Divine. By this, the state of self-control and purity of feelings will become automatically perfected. The habit of dwelling in divine contemplation will restrain the outgoing tendencies and nature. The craving for happiness causes the mind to be drawn outside through the senses. The mind starts getting restless. Divine contemplation by influencing the inner state makes the mind serene, tranquil and stable. This is the silence of the mind and also the control of the mind. The desire and thoughts of the worldly objects accumulate impressions inside. The thoughts and feelings are dominated by these predispositions and deformations. Divine contemplation rides the inner-self of these impurities. In the inner-self the emotions of peace, affection, good feelings, compassion, welfare of others arise by themselves. This is the purification of emotions. All these have been acknowledged by the Gita as the austerity of the mind.
