Food is necessary and essential to the body. To keep the body functioning properly and to extract work out of it, it is necessary to provide it with food. But it is very important to take care as to what kind of food should be consumed! If the food is such which creates ill-health and also causes loss of spirituality from life, then what is the use of such kind of food? That is why the Gita in its glorious inspirations has given food a special place. First against rajoguni and now against tamoguni meals is given a warning.
All these kinds of food lead to indolence, laziness, sleep and sluggishness. They vitiate the inner state. Half-cooked pulses, rice, cereals, etc. will somewhere or the other cause harm to the body, cannot be easily digested! An easily digestible meal generates vitality inside the body, whereas tamasic food increases laziness and indolence. Any food-item which is kept stored for a long time and has started giving a foul smell, such food is also of the tamoguni type. Foul smelling also means that on consuming things like onion and garlic while even talking to someone bad odour is emitted-this is tamoguni. The main reason for prohibiting intake of onions and garlic is their nature to increase tamoguni qualities. Without giving a thought, to eat the food left half eaten by someone will cause the effect of whatever predispositions of that person to be carried over to the person who eats it. Pure and clean food is of satvic nature. Impure and eaten food by others increases tamoguna. Flesh, eggs, liquor etc. which are not worth consuming-the flesh of dead animals is extremely impure. In very noble words the preacher of the Gita has said a lot here. Use and apply discrimination. Understand everything with an open mind. If we have to progress on the path of self-upiftment then it is imperative to put a restraint on the rajoguni and tamoguni propensities. The satvic qualities have to be awakened inside and with firmness and discipline satoguni food has to be accepted.
