If it has been heard without the ego sense it is bound to have its impact. Any discipline of activity does not fructify if it is done with arrogance in the mind. Arjun heard with a feeling of experiencing the Lord's grace and kept the ego of his eligibility entirely apart. In spirituality the role of listening is of prime importance. The Upanishad has described the first step towards self-realization as 'srotavyah' listening, then 'mantavyah' reflection and then ultimately 'nidhidhyasititah' contemplating time and again. In the description of the nine ways of devotion (navdha bhakti) the first stepping stone is that of devoted listening. In the Gita too listening has been acknowledged as a means for crossing the ocean of the world. Te'pi catitarantyeva mrtyum srutiprayanah' (Gita 13/25). They too cross over death by their devotion due to what they have heard. Listening is good and necessary too; but along with listening if the importance and the glory of what is being heard is also understood then it is all the more glorious. Whatever the mind gives importance to it develops a natural inclination towards it.
